Introduction to Stroke Care
A Stroke, also known as Cerebrovascular Accident, occurs when the blood supply to part of your brain is interrupted or reduced. This can happen when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or a blood clot blocks the blood flow, preventing oxygen and nutrients from reaching brain tissue.
If the Stroke you or your loved one suffered was relatively small, the effects may be overcome with the right support and you may be able to live an almost completely normal life after this event. However, a more severe Stroke may leave you with permanent disabilities as a result of the injury to certain parts of your brain. If this is the case, there are many interventions that can be implemented by our Stroke Support Specialists to greatly improve your quality of life.

Stroke Information
Blood clots typically form over time in areas where the arteries narrow or are blocked due to fatty deposits known as plaques. Alternatively, blood vessels can rupture at areas where the blood vessel wall is weak or thin from a congenital malformation or acquired vessel injury.
The most common cause of Stroke is cardiovascular disease which can be the result of high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, smoking, or it may be due to a genetic or autoimmune disease. It only takes minutes without oxygen for cells in our brain to start dying off without necessary blood supply. Therefore, early intervention and treatment from health professionals is crucial to reduce brain injury and potential long-term complications in Stroke patients.
If you or your loved one has suffered a Stroke, this can have a huge impact on many aspects of your life. If the Stroke you or your loved one suffered was relatively small, the effects may be overcome with the right support and you may be able to live an almost completely normal life after this event.

What Does Our Stroke Care Involve?
We have four major categories of Stroke care support services. Each category of Stroke support contributes to your overall well-being and expands personal options to live a life that is most fulfilling.
By providing each of these elements, we help you set a course for greater independence with reliable support.
Types of Stroke Care Support Services
Our team works one on one with you to help you with day-to-day activities, connect you with high quality treatment and therapy services. Our support includes a full range of different services for you to determine which will best suit you. Options include any or all of the following:
How do you Care for a Stroke Patient?
People who have experienced a Stroke often require support and rehabilitation. If your loved one lives with a disability due to a Stroke, it’s important to encourage them in their rehabilitation and therapy and help them with day to day activities they are unable to complete.
Communication is another important means of support, both with the patient as well as their support workers to identify individual goals and challenges.
Can the Brain Repair Itself After a Stroke?
The human body is very resilient and tries to recover any function that is lost through illness or injury. The brain’s cells attempt to repair and replenish any functions lost when a person suffers a Stroke, though this happens predominantly in the 3 to 6 months following its occurrence.
Functional deficits or disabilities that remain after this time are most often permanent, but there are excellent support services available to help patients live fully.
Is Stroke Care Covered by the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is available throughout Australia to anyone under the age of 65 who can demonstrate they have a permanent intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychosocial disability. The overall aim of the NDIS is to improve an injured person’s ability to function in all aspects of daily living and, over time, gain more independence.
If you or your loved one has one or more of these disabilities as a result of a Stroke and needs professional support to manage their injury, you may be eligible for support under this scheme.
At Maple Community Services, we can walk you through the assessment process to see if you qualify for NDIS Stroke Care benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we will facilitate the process and have the full capacity to provide the comprehensive support services you need.
What Can NDIS Fund For Stroke Care?
The NDIS funds several critical services for people who have disabilities resulting from a Stroke. These include personal care support, community access support, nutritional support, skills development, transport, household tasks, and behavioural support. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available vary by the severity of the disability or dysfunction.
By partnering with Maple Community Services, together, we can help you identify your priorities and cater a support plan that provides the specific services you need, enabling you to lead a fulfilling life.
How much funding can you get from NDIS?
