How do you Care for a Stroke Patient?
People who have experienced a Stroke often require support and rehabilitation. If your loved one lives with a disability due to a Stroke, it’s important to encourage them in their rehabilitation and therapy and help them with day to day activities they are unable to complete.
Communication is another important means of support, both with the patient as well as their support workers to identify individual goals and challenges.
Can the Brain Repair Itself After a Stroke?
The human body is very resilient and tries to recover any function that is lost through illness or injury. The brain’s cells attempt to repair and replenish any functions lost when a person suffers a Stroke, though this happens predominantly in the 3 to 6 months following its occurrence.
Functional deficits or disabilities that remain after this time are most often permanent, but there are excellent support services available to help patients live fully.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is available throughout Australia to anyone under the age of 65 who can demonstrate they have a permanent intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychosocial disability. The overall aim of the NDIS is to improve an injured person’s ability to function in all aspects of daily living and, over time, gain more independence.
If you or your loved one has one or more of these disabilities as a result of a Stroke and needs professional support to manage their injury, you may be eligible for support under this scheme.

The NDIS funds several critical services for people who have disabilities resulting from a Stroke. These include personal care support, community access support, nutritional support, skills development, transport, household tasks, and behavioural support. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available vary by the severity of the disability or dysfunction.
