What is Respite Accommodation
Respite Accommodation is housing and support for a brief period away from your usual home. Sometimes called short term accommodation, Respite Accommodation can be funded by NDIS Plans for up to 14 days at a time if your usual support system isn’t available. It can also be used to overcome new challenges or act as a bridge into different types of support.
What are the Benefits of Respite Accommodation?
Besides providing a break for a patient’s primary caregivers, there are other benefits of Respite Accommodation for people living with disabilities. These are some of the key outcomes:
- Overcome unexpected functional changes
- Improved personal and life skills
- Increased independence and functional abilities
- Work towards achieving an individual’s NDIS Plan goals
- Meet new peers with similar interests or challenges
In the end, both patient and caregiver can come back to their usual home dwelling with a renewed commitment to the patient’s goals. To learn more about our Respite Accommodation and how you can avail of our services, please visit our page on short term accommodation.
What is the Difference Between Respite and Short Term Accommodation?
Under the NDIS, short term accommodation and Respite Accommodation are classed in the same category of funding. The two terms for accommodation are very similar, yet some of the goals providers have set for the types of service provided have changed over the years.
Historically, the term “respite” focused on the break that a primary caregiver received when someone living with a disability was housed in a short term accommodation. In today’s conceptions of support, Respite Accommodation is thought of as beneficial for both the resident and the support network. It focuses on how the short term stay can benefit the person living with the disability, while providing a break from the support work of their usual caregivers.
