Introduction to Autism

A 2015 survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that about 1 in 150 Australians have Autism. Although people with Autism face many challenges, they can still live the life they choose when they receive the right help. We have abundant experience in helping both children and adults with Autism achieve their goals. Our Autism Care Specialist is ready to meet your needs for outstanding Autism Support.

How Do You Care for Someone with Autism?

Most people with Autism receive care from family members or others close to them. While an Autism Specialist is engaged in training and ongoing education, many family members need assistance in learning how to care for someone with Autism.

These tips can help you offer the best family Autism Care:

  • Concentrate on empowering them rather than doing things for them.
  • Educate yourself and practice empathy to understand their needs
  • Be prepared to adapt your care as their needs change
  • Tailor your care to their unique set of conditions if they have more than one disability
  • Help them with self-care when needed, but give them space to do it on their own whenever possible
  • Keep records of their reactions to the products they use
  • Ask them to speak slowly and use fewer words if they are having trouble communicating
  • Protect them from all forms of abuse
  • Take care of yourself, too, so you will have the strength and stability to continue helping them
  • Work with an Autism Support Coordinator to ensure they get all the services they need

Community Participation

Maple Community Services can assist you or your loved one in accessing and participating in the community. We guide, support, mentor, and motivate you to succeed and reach set goals for social interaction and recreation.

Development - life skills

Developing Life Skills is all about building your or your loved one’s confidence and enabling independent living. We do this by developing a plan which gives you the training needed to achieve life goals. Supports we provide in this area include educating on personal hygiene, maintaining a clean environment at home, and organisational skills to name a few.

Types of Autism Support Services

We have four major categories of Autism Support Services. Each type of Autism Care contributes to you or your loved one’s overall wellbeing and expands personal options to choose the life that is most pleasing.

Core Supports

Core Supports are the services that enable you to complete activities of daily living, working towards your goals, and meeting your objectives.

Support Coordination

Support Coordination means we help you identify, coordinate and access support services and disability services providers on your behalf.

Plan Management

Plan Management consists of supporting you to manage your NDIS Funding. We are the connection between you, providers, and the NDIA.

Accommodation

Accommodation/SIL provides assistance and/or supervision of daily tasks to help you live as independently and happily as possible.

Is Autism Covered by the NDIS?

Yes! Because Autism is a permanent disability, it is covered by the NDIS in most cases, depending on the severity of your or your loved one’s condition. As of 2019, the average NDIS participant with Autism received $32,800 annually.

For children under the age of seven, the amount was $16,700.

At Maple, we can assist you in the process of assessment to see if you or your loved one qualifies for NDIS Autism benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we have the capacity to provide the services needed.

What Can NDIS Fund for Autism?

The NDIS funds several critical services for people with Autism. These include speech and occupational therapy, physiotherapy, personal care support, community access support, nutritional support, skill development, and behavioural support.

NDIS funding can also provide sensory toys, holiday camps, or pay for a Support Worker to assist you or your loved one at home. The types and amounts of funding available are determined partly by the level of severity.

For children younger than seven years of age, NDIS funding provides early interventions, takes a family-centred approach, and helps families connect with Autism Services Providers.

At Maple, we can assist you or your loved one with the NDIS Application to receive your or your loved one’s rightful funding.

Skills & Qualifications of Our Autism Support Workers

Our Support Workers for Autism have studied and trained diligently to understand and respond to the needs of children and adults with autism. Our team engages in continuing education to hone their skills and keep up with the latest developments in Autism Care.

You work with a highly qualified Autism Specialist in Sydney or across Australia to improve your or your loved one’s life and enhance overall well being.

Our Autism Support Workers are specialists who have targeted expertise to provide assistance for people. Our Support Workers have training and experience in all aspects of Autism Care, from special programmes for young children to occupational supports for adults with autism. We use special tools and technologies to work with children, including those who do not have speech.

Is Autism Level 1 Covered by NDIS?

Possibly. Autism Level 1 severity includes autism spectrum conditions that need some support but are milder than level 2 or level 3. Some of these conditions include Asperger syndrome, childhood autism, atypical autism, and developmental disorders.

If you or your child has level 1 Autism, the NDIS rules will require further assessments to determine eligibility for NDIS funding. Speak to one of our Autism Support Workers for more details on how we can help.
