Introduction to Genetic Conditions

Genes that are passed from parent to child are the building blocks of heredity. Our genes are the carriers of DNA and hold the instructions for making proteins. A Genetic Condition is caused by a change in the DNA sequence of our genes or errant production of the proteins that they encode.

There are a variety of therapies and medications that can help those who live with Genetic Conditions but some people require additional support to fully participate in daily activities and their community. Thankfully, there are ample support services available to ensure that people who live with Genetic Conditions don’t have to sacrifice their quality of life.

Genetic Conditions Information

Genetic Conditions often occur after inheriting an altered gene from your parents. If you are born with an altered gene of specific DNA or DNA sequences, it puts you at a higher risk of developing a Genetic Condition. However, not all genetic conditions are passed down; sometimes, DNA can mutate while you are developing in the womb or even throughout your lifetime.

There are four primary types of Genetic Conditions:

  • Single-Gene Disorders, where one gene is mutated. For example, cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia are single-gene mutations.
  • Chromosomal Disorders, where chromosomes or parts of chromosomes are missing, extra, or altered. For example Down Syndrome, Turner Syndrome, and Klinefelter syndrome have chromosomal alterations.
  • Complex Disorders , where there are mutations in two or more genes. Certain types of cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity are examples.
  • Mitochondrial Disorders, where the unique DNA in mitochondria (a cell’s powerhouse) inherited from your mother have mutations or alterations causing your cells to dysfunction.

Genetic Conditions can present in many different ways and can cause Intellectual Disabilities, Metabolic Dysfunction, and other physical and mental functional deficits that can impact your day to day living.

Genetic Conditions shouldn’t be confused with congenital conditions, which are conditions you’re born with, whereas genetic conditions are part of your DNA. There are Genetic Conditions that cause birth defects such as spina bifida and cleft lip and these can be both genetic and congenital.

Community engagement is an important part of living a full life for people with Genetic Conditions. We guide, support, mentor, and motivate you or your loved one to succeed and reach set goals for social interaction and recreation.

Life Skills Development

Developing Life Skills is all about building your or your loved one’s confidence and enabling independent living. We do this by developing a customised plan which gives you the training needed to achieve your life goals. The support we provide in this area includes specific education on personal hygiene, maintaining a clean environment at home, and organisational skills to name a few.

Are Genetic Conditions Covered by the NDIS?

If you or your loved one have a disability resulting from a Genetic Condition, you may be eligible for NDIS funding. If you haven’t already, you or your representative will need to complete an access request form and provide evidence of the impact of your disability on your everyday functioning.

At Maple Community Services, we can assist you in the assessment process to see if you or your loved one qualifies for NDIS Genetic Condition benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we can provide comprehensive services to enhance your quality of life.

What Can NDIS Fund for Genetic Conditions?

The NDIS funds several critical services for people with disabilities resulting from Genetic Conditions. These include speech and occupational therapy, physiotherapy, personal care support, community access support, nutritional support, skill development, transport, household tasks, and behavioural support. NDIS funding can also provide sensory toys, holiday camps, or pay for a Support Worker to assist you or your loved one at home. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available are determined by the severity of an individual’s disability.

For children younger than seven years of age, NDIS provides funding for early interventions, takes a family-centred approach, and helps families connect with Genetic Condition Service Providers. At Maple, we can assist you or your loved one with the NDIS application to secure the needed financial support.
