Symptoms of Genetic Condition include patients experiencing changes in their ability to think about and perform tasks and control their emotions, as well as difficulties with physical activity and uncontrolled movements. Patients living with Huntington’s Disease can experience complications of the illness including pneumonia, difficulty eating and swallowing, urinary tract infections, and bowel incontinence, but it nearly always progresses to dementia, and eventually death.
Huntington’s Disease is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner, which means that if someone has one parent affected by the illness, there is a 50% chance that they will inherit the same aberrant genes and eventually develop symptoms. Progressive generations of patients with the disease experience symptoms at a younger age. There is no cure for Huntington’s Disease, but there are medications and therapies which can improve the quality of life and functional abilities of patients living with it.
Huntington’s Disease is usually diagnosed in patients who have a family member who had the illness. The diagnosis can be made via a combination of genetic testing and brain imaging. Most people with Huntington’s Disease begin to experience symptoms when they are middle aged. Treatment is usually started when patients begin to show symptoms and is aimed at reducing the impact of those symptoms on their function and well-being.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is available throughout Australia to anyone under the age of 65 who can demonstrate that they have a permanent intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychosocial disability. The overall aim of the NDIS is to improve a person’s ability to function in all aspects of daily living and, if possible, gain more independence.
