Multiple Sclerosis describes the process when the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) that covers nerve fibers, causing communication problems between your brain or spinal cord and the nerves throughout your body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage and deterioration of nerve function.
MS can lead to a wide range of symptoms that can differ from person to person over the course of the disease depending on the location of the affected nerve fibers. Symptoms can include numbness or weakness in one or more limbs at a time, typically on the same side of your body, tremors, a lack of coordination, or problems with your bowels or bladder. Some patients also experience an electric shock sensation when bending the neck forward.
MS can also affect your vision, with some patients experiencing partial or complete loss of vision. This is usually experienced in one eye at a time and can cause pain with eye movement. Other possible eye troubles may include prolonged double vision or blurry vision.
Other nonspecific symptoms such as slurred speech, fatigue, dizziness, or problems with sexual function may also occur.
MS is a neurodegenerative disease with many different subtypes:
- Relapsing-remitting MS - the most common type of MS which can come and go with different symptoms for periods of time
- Secondary progressive MS - relapsing-remitting MS can develop into this
- Primary progressive MS - usually diagnosed later in life and presents with symptoms such as difficulties with walking and balance
- Progressive relapsing MS - the least common type of MS, where symptoms can vary depending on the area affected
- Balo’s Disease - this has been connected to MS and may be a rare form of the disease
- MS in children - MS usually occurs in adults, but children are being diagnosed with MS more frequently

Types of Multiple Sclerosis Support Services
Multiple Sclerosis Support Services can begin early at diagnosis and continue through your or your loved one’s life as and when they’re needed depending on the effects of the disease.
Whether you’re in relapse or remission, your symptoms can be continuously monitored and our services can be adjusted to suit your needs at any given time. At Maple, our Multiple Sclerosis Specialist can help you arrange services to help you every step of the way.
The NDIS funds several critical services for people with Multiple Sclerosis. These include speech and occupational therapy, physiotherapy, personal care support, nutritional support, and behavioural support. NDIS funding can even pay for a Support Worker to assist you or your loved one at home. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available are determined partly by the level of severity.
For children younger than seven years of age, NDIS funding provides early interventions, takes a family-centred approach, and helps families connect with Multiple Sclerosis services providers.
