Introduction to Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular Dystrophy is a group of diseases that damage and weaken your muscles over time. It is an inherited disease that affects your DNA. Abnormal or mutated genes interfere with the production of the muscle proteins that are necessary for the normal function of your muscles. When these proteins are defective, people are considered to have some form of Muscular Dystrophy.
Muscular Dystrophy can present at any age, but most cases are identified in childhood and young boys are more prone to the disease. There are many therapies and medications that can help those who live with Muscular Dystrophy to manage their illness and live full lives. Thankfully, Maple is very well equipped to provide ample support services to those living with Muscular Dystrophy.

Muscular Dystrophy Information
Muscular Dystrophy can present at any age, but most cases are identified in childhood and young boys are more prone to the disease than girls. Symptoms may include issues with standing up or walking, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or muscle weakness and incoordination. These symptoms can affect the ability to perform many normal activities depending on the severity of the illness.
The specific type of Muscular Dystrophy affects the patient’s prognosis. Many people with the disease can lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, or look after themselves and will eventually require assistive devices and other supportive measures. There is currently no cure for Muscular Dystrophy, but certain treatments and supports can help someone with the disease to live a more comfortable, fulfilling, and independent life.
There are several different categories of Muscular Dystrophy, with more than 30 sub-types with varying severity and symptoms:
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common type among children, almost exclusively affecting boys. Children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy develop symptoms at a young age, initially having difficulty standing up and walking. As it progresses, they will continue to have issues with movement, posture, and reflexes, often with mild intellectual impairment.
Becker Muscular Dystrophy is similar to Duchenne, though less severe. It also affects boys and usually presents as muscle weakness in the arms and legs, developing between the ages of 11 and 25. Patients with Becker are unlikely to digress as quickly as Duchenne, or they may never reach the same levels of disability, but daily living activities can still be significantly affected.
Congenital Muscular Dystrophy is often apparent before the age of 2 when parents notice their child’s motor functions and muscle control aren’t developing as they should. Symptoms of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy can vary drastically, where some patients succumb in infancy, while others live into adulthood.
Myotonic Dystrophy is also known as Steinert’s Disease. It causes myotonia, exclusive to this type of Muscular Dystrophy, which is an inability to relax muscles after they contract. It is most common in young adults and symptoms can vary greatly from mild to life threatening.
Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD), also called Landouzy-Dejerine Disease, affects the upper body and face and can cause hearing and respiratory dysfunction. Appearing in young adults, It progresses slowly and patients can live a long life, though support can improve a patient’s daily living.
Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy causes loss of muscle bulk and strength. It causes symptoms primarily in the shoulders and hips, but people with this condition have a normal life expectancy. Patients develop symptoms in their 20s, after which they may require support for optimal functioning.
Oculopharyngeal Muscular Dystrophy (OPMD) can cause weakness in the face, neck, and shoulder muscles later in life in men and women, causing difficulty in daily activities.
Distal Muscular Dystrophy, also known as Distal Myopathy, affects muscles in your extremities including the hands and forearms; and feet and calves. It can also cause respiratory or heart symptoms. It presents in middle-aged adults and patients may require assistance or support.

Types of Muscular Dystrophy Support Services
People living with Muscular Dystrophy face the known physical challenges but apart from this there are social, family, career and emotional challenges involved. It is crucial that they receive the support they need to remain as independent as possible and fulfill their desires to continue working, studying and travelling for as long as possible.
Muscular Dystrophy support services can begin early and continue through your or your loved one’s life, while assessing and adjusting the supports required to your needs. At Maple, our Muscular Dystrophy Specialists can help you arrange services to assist you every step of the way.
Is Muscular Dystrophy Covered by the NDIS?
Yes! If you or your loved one suffers from a type of Muscular Dystrophy, it is covered under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), and you may be eligible for funding to avail of our support services.
The type of Muscular Dystrophy and the severity of your symptoms determines your eligibility. For the NDIS, different forms of Muscular Dystrophy and severity are listed under categories B, C and D. At Maple, we can assist you in the assessment process to see if you or your loved one qualifies for NDIS Muscular Dystrophy benefits. If you or your loved one meets the criteria, we have the capacity to provide comprehensive services to enhance your quality of life.
What Can NDIS Fund For Muscular Dystrophy?
The NDIS funds several critical services for people with Muscular Dystrophy. These include occupational therapy, physiotherapy, personal care support, community participation, nutritional support and customized home services. NDIS funding can even pay for a Support Worker to assist you or your loved one at home. Plan Management and Support Coordination Funding are almost always offered to NDIS Participants when they receive their plan. The types and amounts of funding available are determined primarily by the level of disability.
For children younger than seven years of age, NDIS funding provides early interventions, takes a family-centred approach, and helps families connect with Muscular Dystrophy service providers. At Maple, we can assist you or your loved one with the NDIS application to receive your or your loved one’s needed funding.

Rather than focusing on the specific diagnosis, these Muscular Dystrophy assessments are designed to determine the functional deficits of your or your loved one’s disability and level of impairment requiring support in everyday life.
