Special needs group homes are designed for people who require a higher level of support and supervision but may not require the same level of medical needs as those in high-intensity support homes. These homes are often set up in residential neighbourhoods and can include a mix of single-story houses, units or villas.
Group homes for seniors
Group homes for seniors cater to older adults who need assistance with daily living activities but wish to maintain some level of independence. These homes can be single-story houses or apartment style units. They offer a sense of community for residents while providing services like meal preparation, medication management and housekeeping.
Children’s group homes
Children’s group homes offer care and support for children and adolescents with various needs, it can also include those in the foster care system and with behavioural challenges. These homes may vary in size and layout, with some resembling traditional family homes and others having multiple bedrooms or units to accommodate several children.
Public and community housing
Public and community housing is for people with lower medical and support needs. Houses can include modifications such as accessible bathrooms and entrance ramps for heightened independence. These houses may be single-story houses, townhomes or apartment style units. Residents often share common spaces while providing privacy, and support for daily activities as needed.

The NDIS funding for accommodation in a group home for people living with disabilities is only available to those with high-level functional impairments or high support needs under SDA. SDA funding is used for housing, not services or supports. You will need to determine if you or your loved one qualify for the SDA funding, SIL funding, or both, through the NDIA’s assessment and planning process.
The funding under SIL supports the assistance and services needed in these situations rather than the costs of the accommodations themselves (as is the case with SDA funding). Expenses such as rent, groceries, utilities, telephones, and internet access, as well as general household items such as furniture, appliances, and cooking utensils are the responsibility of the participant or may be supported through other government or non-government programs. Assistive devices or aids can be supported through NDIS SIL funding
The NDIS relies on evidence and advice from Allied Health Professionals to determine if a participant is eligible for SDA or SIL funding. The areas that health professionals must address are the following:
- The significant impact of the participant’s disability on their mobility, self care, and cognition.
- The type of housing that would be appropriate for the participant.
- The other types of supports required for the participant to achieve their housing goals.
