What to expect from an SIL assessment NDIS

SIL assessments are all about you–your needs, your goals, and your dreams. They help identify the specific support you need to live comfortably and independently in a shared or private living arrangement. Whether it’s personal care, daily activities, or building life skills, these assessments ensure you get the right assistance tailored just for you.

An NDIS supported independent living (SIL) assessment will evaluate a participant’s specific needs and preferences so that a comprehensive and tailored SIL plan can be developed. A multidisciplinary team of professionals will assess your personal care needs, daily activities, health and medical support, community integration and skills development.

If you’ve recently learned that you need an SIL assessment with the NDIS, there’s no need to worry. This assessment is designed with your best interests in mind. It aims to ensure that you receive the appropriate funding and support to meet all of your SIL needs, helping you to live more independently and comfortably.

What are SIL assessments?

NDIS Supported Independent Living (SIL) assessments are designed to evaluate the level and type of support you might need to live as independently as possible. These assessments are an important component of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as they help ensure you get the right funding and services tailored specifically to your needs.

The assessment process is thorough, considering every aspect of your daily life–from personal care and household tasks to health management and social activities. A team of dedicated professionals will work with you, listening to your preferences and understanding your goals, to develop a support plan that truly works for you.

Every case is assessed individually and your Support Coordinator and NDIS planner can help you to set up an assessment if you think SIL funding is right for you.

Who conducts a Supported Independent Living assessment?

NDIS approved assessors are professionals who have been specifically approved by the NDIS to conduct assessments. They have the necessary qualifications and experience to accurately evaluate a participant’s support requirements.

Ideally, an NDIS SIL assessment will involve everyone who provides you support in any capacity, including yourself. If you have multiple health providers, an occupational therapist, a support coordinator, an NDIS planner and your support worker or caregiver can all provide information about your support needs to the assessor.

These professionals work together, often in a multidisciplinary team, to conduct a thorough assessment that considers all aspects of the participant’s life. By bringing together different perspectives and expertise, they ensure that your plan not only meets your immediate requirements but also promotes your independence and quality of life.

What is included in an NDIS SIL assessment?

Your multidisciplinary team will look at different aspects of how you live and where you might benefit from extra support. Key components of an NDIS SIL assessment include:

  • Personal care needs – They will look at how you manage your daily activities like bathing, dressing, and eating. The goal is to understand where you might need a helping hand to make your day easier.
  • Daily living activities – From cooking to cleaning, how you handle household chores will be assessed. This helps us figure out what support you’ll need to keep your living space comfortable and safe.
  • Health and medical support – Your health is top priority. Your medical needs will be reviewed, including medication management and appointments, to ensure you stay healthy and well.
  • Behavioural support – If you have any behaviours that need special attention, strategies can be developed to support you, making sure you feel understood and secure.
  • Community access and participation – We want you to be an active part of your community. We’ll explore ways to help you join activities, make friends, and enjoy social interactions.
  • Skill development – This is an opportunity to focus on your strengths and areas for growth. Whether it’s budgeting, time management, or communication, funding can be allocated to help you build skills that boost your independence.

What to expect from an SIL assessment

The SIL assessment starts with an initial consultation with an allied health professional to understand your needs, preferences and goals. You can have a trusted family member or supporter with you during the consultation. A comprehensive evaluation will provide a complete picture of your daily life and support requirements.

Your doctors, therapists, and any other specialists will join the conversation to ensure that every aspect of your care is considered. Based on the findings of the assessment a detailed plan will be developed to address your unique needs and preferences. This plan outlines the types of support you’ll receive, when you’ll receive it, and who will provide it.

Your Supported Independent Living requirements can be regularly reviewed so that when your circumstances change your plan can be adjusted to meet your needs.

Why are SIL assessments important?

SIL assessments are all about you and your journey to independence. By understanding your unique needs and preferences, we ensure that the support you need is not only effective but also empowering. Our goal is to enhance your independence, wellbeing and, and integration into the community.

These assessments are about more than ticking boxes–they’re about understanding you as an individual, ensuring that your support plan is holistic, addressing every aspect of your life and helping you secure the funding and resources you need to thrive.
